PLAYWRIGHT
I came across some letters my Irish grandma wrote to her mother about motherhood when she was just 27. Later that same year, I also learned of my Great Great Aunt, Sugra Humayan Mirza, who founded the first school for girls in India after not being able to have children of her own. I saw so much of myself in these two women whom I never knew, yet were my ancestors. So I decided to write a play about it...
this play isn't about brian.
A PLAY BY NIKKI MIRZA
SYNOPSIS: Malika’s biracial identity is in layers, not split apart in halves. The contradictions of her Irish Catholic and Islamic South Asian upbringing dawn on her as she tries to carve her own path, leaving her celebrating and resenting the legacies of the generations before her. How do we stay connected to the ones we love, despite the ways they corner us into sometimes damaging belief systems? this play isn’t about brian is a dramedy that vibrantly follows a week in the life of 32 year old Malika, with transportive flashbacks to moments of her past that are laughably relatable, and pivotal in her journey of understanding femininity and sexuality. Unsnap your bras (or maybe tighten them) as we explore the inner workings of this individual woman’s mind— which you will probably find to be quite a universal mindfuck.
